Confused Weather Drops Over 30 Inches of Snow on Memorial Day Weekend

It's a snowy Memorial Day weekend for parts of the U.S. On the aptly named Whiteface Mountain in upstate New York, there are at least 34 inches of snow on the ground. What's that look like? Glad you asked: According to Weather Underground, a couple of other mountain peaks in Vermont reached 18 inches of snow, while some towns with higher elevations clocked in at about 7 inches of snowfall this weekend. To figure out how unusual the snowfall this weekend was, Weather Underground had to go back to 1816:But, they note, snowfall in the north east this late in the season hasn't been unheard of since then: the area tends to get some late season snowfall every 5-10 years. Just not nearly as much as this time.

Termites swarm New Orleans, people think it’s the Apocalypse

Tens of thousands of formosan termites swarmed New Orleans on Wednesday night, leading many people to believe that the apocalypse had struck the city. The termites were attracted to bright and well-lit devices, which included car headlights, homes, and streetlights. The insects were expected to hit at the beginning of May, but it has been an unusually cold few weeks, and they only made their first appearance on Wednesday night. The Formosan termites were introduced to the United States of America from the Far East during World War Two when they were brought over in crates and various wood products. New Orleans normally sees the creatures appear along Lake Pontchartrain and at the naval shipyard in Algiers. These huge swarms gather and stay in the area because they are only able to fly 300 yards in search of a mate. The pair then drop to the floor and burrow a nest if they are successful, but most of them are unable to find a mate and proper shelter. These colonies normally consist of around five million insects, and it takes around five years to reach a size where the colony can create a version of the termite with wings to restart the flying cycle. Of course, this wasn’t the  first faux apocalypse to hit the globe over the last 12 months. The Mayan Apocalypse was supposed to hit earth on December 21 but never materialized, and joined a long list of failed apocalypses. In 1997, Chuck Shramek stated that an alien UFO was following the comet Hale-Bopp as it passed by Earth. Shramek stated that you could only enter the alien ship, which wasn’t designed to kill us but save us from the impending end of the world, if you killed yourself first. Unfortunately for them the apocalypse didn’t follow.

Space Alert / Radiation storm

SUBSIDING RADIATION STORM: A solar radiation storm in progress around Earth is slowly subsiding. It currently ranks S2 (moderate) on NOAA storm scales, which means that satellites in Earth orbit could experience "single event upsets" in their electronic systems. The radiation storm is also a source of noise in spacecraft cameras, giving their images a snowy appearance (see below).
M5-CLASS EXPLOSION: The ongoing radiation storm got started on May 22nd when the magnetic canopy of sunspot AR1745 exploded. The blast produced an M5-class solar flare and hurled a magnificent CME over the sun's western limb:
The movie of the CME is very "snowy." That is caused by high-energy solar protons striking the CCD camera in SOHO's coronagraph. Each strike produces a brief snow-like speckle in the image. This hailstorm of solar protons is what forecasters mean by "radiation storm."
Although the explosion was not squarely Earth-directed, the CME will likely be geoeffective. The expanding cloud appears set to deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on May 24th around 1200 UT. According to NOAA forecast models, the impact will more than double the solar wind plasma density around Earth and boost the solar wind speed to ~600 km/s. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras.

Massive sinkhole kills five in south China town of Shenzhen

Five killed by south China sinkhole
FIVE people have died after a 10-metre wide sinkhole opened up at the gates of an industrial estate in Shenzhen, the southern Chinese boom town neighbouring Hong Kong.
The Shenzhen Longgang district government said on its verified page on Sina Weibo, China's version of Twitter, that five people had died and added that it was investigating the incident.
The sinkhole formed just outside the Huamao Industrial Park in Shenzhen on Monday evening, at a time when many factory workers would have been changing shifts, according to the website of Beijing-based newspaper the Guangming Daily.
The state-run Shanghai Daily newspaper said that rescuers saved one man.
Reports said it was unclear how many people had fallen into the hole in total, but the search was continuing on Tuesday.Sinkholes in China are often blamed on construction works and the country's rapid pace of development.
Surveillance cameras in March captured images of a security guard being swallowed by a sinkhole, also in Shenzhen.
Two months ago a man was killed when his bedroom was swallowed by a eight metre sinkhole in Florida, in the US.

Tremblement de terre de 5.1 près de Ottawa

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake centered northwest of Ottawa rattled buildings Friday in Ontario and Quebec and was felt across upstate New York from Buffalo to the Vermont border.
Canada's government agency that monitors earthquakes said the quake it registered a 5.2-magnitude temblor with an epicenter located about 11 miles (17 kilometers) northeast of Shawville, Quebec, about an hour's drive outside Canada's capital.
It was felt as far west as Toronto, Canada's largest city, but no damage was immediately reported.
Twitter erupted with reports of buildings shaking in Ottawa for several seconds. Ontario's premier, who lives in Toronto, tweeted that her house was shaking.
Ontario Provincial Police in Arnprior, Ontario, not far from the epicenter, say they have received no reports of damage. Local media outlets in northern New York say people in communities along the St. Lawrence River and as far east as Lake Champlain on New York-Vermont border reported feeling their homes shake.
There are also reports from residents of Buffalo and surrounding suburbs who say they felt their houses sway and the ground shake for less than one minute. Rochester and Syracuse media outlets also report that the quake was felt in those areas.
The original report said a 4.8-magnitude quake was centered near the town of Braeside, Ontario.

Weird, smelly mystery foam oozes through cracks in Chinese streets

Something very strange started oozing out of the streets in the Chinese city of Nanjing on Saturday night. Generally, when weird things start erupting from the ground in Asian countries it’s in the form of a giant b-movie monster, but this invasion was a whole lot realer, and a whole lot smellier. At around 9PM, pedestrians began to notice the pavement at the Wende Baiyun Lane cross intersection started to crack and split open, and before long, a foamy white substance was spewing from the cracks, brimming with it a foul-smelling stench. Within a short time, the foam had spread to a 50 meter radius and stood a foot high. According to the Chinese news outlet Longhoo, firefighters and police rushed to rope off the scene, evacuating civilians and helping redirect the flow of traffic from the flow of ooze. A short time later, the strange substance stopped leaking and the remnants that weren’t quickly washed into the sewers retreated back into the one centimeter wide cracks in the road, leaving authorities baffled as to what the stinking foam could have been. An investigation has been started into the case of the smelly ooze, but so far, the only rational explanation that officials can come to is that the ‘Godzilla barf’ might be related to nearby subway construction, though even that theory hasn’t answered many questions. What do you think of the weird stinking foam? Did some subterranean monster used a bit too much detergent? -WFB

Une autre... Éruption solaire de classe X3.2 (3e en 24h)

SOLAR ACTIVITY SURGES: A sunspot on the sun's eastern limb is crackling with powerful X-class solar flares. Just-numbered AR1748 announced itself during the early hours of May 13th with an X1.7-class eruption (0217 UT), quickly followed by an X2.8-class flare (1609 UT) and an X3.2-class flare (0117 UT on May 14). These are the strongest flares of the year so far, and they signal a significant increase in solar activity. NOAA forecasters estimate a 40% chance of more X-flares during the next 24 hours.

Nouvelle éruption solaire de classe X2.8 (deuxième aujourd'hui)

http://www.n3kl.org/sun/images/noaa_xrays.gif?

SOLAR ACTIVITY SURGES: A sunspot on the sun's eastern limb is crackling with powerful X-class solar flares. It announced itself with an X1.7-class eruption on May 13th at 0217 UT, quickly followed by an X2.8-class flare at 1609 UT. These are the strongest flares of 2013, and they signal a significant uptick in solar activity. More eruptions are in the offing.
Both of today's flares have produced strong flashes of extreme ultraviolet radiation. Here is the view of the X1.7-flare from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory:
The explosions also hurled coronal mass ejections (CMEs) into space. Coronagraphs onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory are tracking the clouds: movie. The planet in the CME movie is Mercury. Although the CMEs appear to hit Mercury, they do not. In fact, no planets were in the line of fire. However, the CMEs appear to be on course to hit NASA's Epoxi and Spitzer spacecraft on May 15-16.
When the flaring began, the sunspot was hidden behind the sun's eastern limb, but now solar rotation is bringing the active region into view. The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory captured this first look during the waning hours of May 13th:
The next 24 to 48 hours should reveal much about the sunspot, including its size, magnetic complexity, and potential for future flares. For the moment, there is no reason to expect the explosions to stop. Stay tuned for updates.

Éruption Solaire de Classe X1.7

STRONGEST FLARE OF THE YEAR: A sunspot hiding behind the sun's northeastern limb erupted on May 13th at 02:17 UT, producing the strongest solar flare of the year so far. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the extreme UV flash from the X1.7-class eruption:
Coronagraphs onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) tracked a bright CME emerging from the blast site: movie. No planets were in the line of fire. However, the CME appears to be on course to hit NASA's Epoxi and Spitzer spacecraft on May 15th.
The sunspot that produced this blast is on the farside of the sun. Soon, in a few days, it will turn toward Earth, emerging into view over the sun's eastern limb. Stay tuned for a better view and, perhaps, more flares.

Ice Charging Into Northern Minn. Homes Caught on Video

Ice outs are still happening on lakes in northern Minnesota because of our cold and snowy spring.

Now, homes along the shore of Lake Mille Lacs are getting damaged because the ice is moving like a glacier, and pushing up against the homes.

In a video sent to us by KSTP viewer, Darla Johnson, you can see the ice making its charge onto shore. Then in a matter of minutes the wind pushes the ice about 15 feet from the shore to the doors of a home.

Johnson even tried saving patio furniture but she couldn't stop the ice before it pushed in doors and windows, causing damage.

The ice is piled up about three feet high.

Johnson says some crews were working to get the ice away from the homes, but “it's a battle they're not winning right now.”
Some access roads near Izatys Resort were closed Friday, according to Johnson. Only local residents were being let through, she said.
KSTP.com meteorologist Jonathan Yuhas said 35 mph wind gusts Saturday pushed the ice onto the shore.

Ring of fire Solar Eclipse

"RING OF FIRE" SOLAR ECLIPSE: As the sun rose over Australia on Friday morning, May 10th, the solar disk turned into a ring of fire. The day began with an annular solar eclipse:

Nicole Hollenbeck took the picture from inside the narrow path of annularity about 70km south of Newman, Australia. At the time, more than 95% of the sun's diameter was covered by the Moon.
In an annular eclipse the Moon is not quite big enough to cover the entire solar disk. A blinding ring of solar fire juts out around the Moon, overwhelming the sun's delicate corona. It may not be the same as totality, but annularity has a charm and beauty all its own. Browse the gallery for more images from the eclipse zone.

A meteorite has hit another house in Connecticut just 19 days after one landed on a home in Wolcott. The meteorite crashed through a gutter and landed on Jay Langlois' lawn on Red Maple Lane in Waterbury. It was found still intact. It is about the same shape and size of an avocado, weighs 1.6 pounds and measures 2 inches by 2.5 inches by 4 inches. Langlois contacted the same Yale expert who confirmed the meteorite that crashed through a house in Wolcott on April 19. Dr. Stefan Nicolescu, the collections manager for the Mineralogy Division at the Yale Peabody Museum, confirmed a meteorite landed on Langlois' home. According to Nicolescu, the Waterbury meteorite is likely related to the one in Wolcott. It was found miles away from where the Wolcott meteorite landed. He hopes to run additional tests of the two.
